Your Questions About Coleman Tents

James asks…
Does Coleman make the best tents?
We are going camping soon, and want to buy a tent. Everywere we go, we see Coleman tents, and other name brands. I want to know the better name brands for tents if any, and which to stay away from. Please help!

Brian answers:
Coleman tents are good, inexpensive, basic, summertime car-camping tents, but they’re not as well made, innovative or high tech as other tent companies that make top quality three-season, four-season, and mountaineering tents. Some of the top tent brands are Marmot, Bibler, Mountain Hardware, MSR, Sierra Designs, The North Face, Kelty, and REI. Http://www.rei.com/search?vcat=REI_SEARCH&query=tents&x=0&y=0

Donna asks…
Can anyone tell me if this coleman tent is any good?
Looking for a lightweight 2 man tent. Have seen the coleman bedrock 2 and its a reasonable price but can anyone tell me if its any good?

Brian answers:
I am an avid Coleman products supporter and own several different models of their tent products and much of their other camping products. The Bedrock 2 is a good light weight tent, but it’s not free standing. These one pole design tents are very critical on proper set up to keep you dry and comfortable, and if your camping in a place where the ground eats cheap tent steaks for breakfast I would not get it.

Nancy asks…
Coleman Avior X2/X3 tents – any alternatives that aren’t day-glo green?
The Avior X2/X3 tents look ideal for my needs, but I’m going to be wild camping so need something that’s not so conspicuous. Any recommendations?

Brian answers:
I bought the Kraz- which uses the same color motif as the Avior. I wouldnt call it “day glo green. I think its more of a normal pine green color.
Additionally, this is only the fly color, if your camping in the summer months you will most likely have the fly off an the tent is grey & dark green

Lisa asks…
I’ve got an older coleman tent with a tent fabric bottom?
I have an older coleman tent, about 10×10 – it’s got a normal tent fabric bottom, not a tarp bottom. I’ve tried to waterproofing the bottom, but not sure if that much area could be waterproofed. any ideas on still using this? A ground cover won’t prevent water intrusion if it rains.
any thoughts would be helpful
thanks

Brian answers:
Buy a new tent…they are fairly cheap anymore and will protect you better in the long run. Otherwise, buy a cot so your off the ground. Make sure to dig a small trench around the tent and pitch it on a slight incline with the door facing downhill-the rain will go around and away from the tent.

Mark asks…
How do you remove motor oil from a coleman tent?

Brian answers:
Take it to a “spray it yourself” carwash.
Hang it up on the wall inside the carwash on the wall. There are usually hangers for hanging car mats to wash.
Be gentle. Don’t get too close with the spray wand. You may need a friend to help you re-arrange the tent while you hold the spray wand.
Take it home and air dry on a clothes line.
