Inspirational Safari At Ol Pejeta
We spent five nights in Nanyuki, in order to write a great review of Ol Pejeta,in the Mount Kenya area of Kenya.
We went to Olpejeta on business and visitor on the way. I loved every bit of the 3 months that I got to spend here. Olpejeta has more than you can expect. There are plenty of black and white rhinos and there are only 7 north white rhinos in the world, four of which are at olpejeta.
Ever seen chimpanzees? There are 42 of them in a refuge inside olpejeta.
The game drives are wonderful with awe-inspiring staff from the gatekeepers to the drivers.
Over the years Ol Pejeta has become the largest rhino refuge and breeding project in Kenya for the Eastern Black Rhino, now having over 80 of these animals on the conservancy while alongside a considerable number of the Southern White species are happily coexisting with their cousins.
Nevertheless the most important contemporary development was the advent of the most rare of rhino species, the Northern White, 4 of which were donated by the Czech Republic in December 2009, when they arrived in an airlift at the global airport in Nairobi, then was trucked to Ol Pejeta.
There they'll now make an abiding home on Ol Pejeta, and with a little luck achieve success in breeding. 4 more of them are left in Czech zoos, but are generally believed to be too old already for reproductive purposes.
Whilst at Ol Pejeta, the staff kindly told us about the new Lily Pond Humanities Centre on the equator in Nanyuki.
The workers at Ol Pejeta were adamant that we paid a visit to the gigantic art gallery, as it displays affordable contemporary art from East Africa’s top latest artists, away from the hustle and bustle of town life.
You can choose to either soak up the atmosphere of this unruffled and special African arts place, or meet the “Artists in Residence”. The Art Studio houses art graduates from art schools in Nairobi, Kenya who are on fulltime, long-term placements at the arts centre, making and showing new affordable art works.
This new art studio in Nanyuki, intends to operate as a springboard for young artists to launch their art careers, whilst permitting safari visitors to buy original pieces of art.
Safari guests can also enjoy a healthy lunch on a deck, overlooking a massive lily pond.
With the great Mount Kenya Mountain as a backdrop, art visitors can also enjoy watching the white egret, hunting the frogs in the pond!
What Kenyan safari guests find dazzling is that the equator slices clean thru the middle of this Arts Centre. This suggests that you can view provoking African art in both the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern Hemisphere!
This new Arts Centre in Nanyuki, has just installed a new equator sculpture, the Wish World, which is installed exactly at 0000000. Everybody writes down their wishes and then hangs them onto the “Wish Globe”.
The contemporary Arts Centre is also a one-off chance to buy special hand- made African gifts such as beaded sandals, recycled flip flop toys, African masks, Glass chimes, Kenyan metal geckos and plenty more unusual African present concepts.
